Dear Senator McConnell

I am writing to tell you why I believe you should now use your influence to remove President Trump by the 25th Amendment.

I recognize that you have been fiercely committed to maintaining the power of the Republican party to enact its agenda.

The pathway to the Republican Party continuing to wield national power beyond this debacle can only happen through a key leader in the Republican Party owning the mistake and taking public responsibility for ensuring accountability of a President who has done deep harm to our Republic.

President Trump has desecrated our democracy with insurrection and violence. His words have led to blood in the halls of Congress. The events of January 6th will forever mar the vision we hold of our country.

He has tarnished American democracy.

It seems you made a calculated bargain, thinking that enabling Trump to take over the Republican Party was necessary to preserve its power by motivating its base.

What is also now clear to most of us, including you I believe, is that you were wrong to endanger our Republic by indulging the man. He will go down in history, I believe, as the most dangerous President in history.

You know this. It’s evidenced in your speech and your recent actions. You have started, at last, to break with his biggest lies.

But the path to a viable future for Republicans requires that you now own that you failed in your leadership to prevent what just happened.

You need to take your share of responsibility for what has been perpetrated and then protect our country from further harm by rendering the threat powerless.

That’s why I believe that you need to champion the removal of the President now if the Republican Party values you cherish will have a chance to shape national American policy in the decade to come.

The damage the Trump Presidency will have done to the Republican brand before this is finished is going to be intense. And if the severe destruction phase is reached without any major Republican leaders taking ownership for the mistake and publicly protecting America from further harm, it will lose its chance at redemption as a respected political party.

What that means is that your best hope to have Republican values influence American policy in the decade to come is for you to assume the lead role in taking responsibility for what you empowered, catalyze the process to remove Trump via the 25th Amendment, then step down as Senator altogether, while asking for forgiveness from the American people.

Only then, I believe, can you redeem your role in history as one of the most powerful enablers of American’s first authoritarian President, who nearly capsized our democracy.

If you sincerely pray for guidance, I believe you will recognize the truth in what I have written. Electing, enabling, and empowering Donald Trump as President has been a kind of sin against America. You were a lead enabler of his reign and prevented his accountability through impeachment.

Ultimately, the desecration of the Capitol is partly on your shoulders because you blocked his removal when you had the chance. He appears to believe many of his delusions. You, though, don’t have that excuse.

When you freed him from consequences for criminal deeds, you empowered his darkest impulses. It is thus YOUR blood on the floor of the Capitol as well.

You could have stopped him when the damage was less severe.

You played along with lies in order to preserve your power.

You thus own this calamity and until you take ownership to protect us all from further danger, history will paint you with the same brushstrokes as Trump.

Your path to absolution has to lead through taking responsibility now to prevent further harm by using all your influence to call Pence and the Cabinet into Trump’s removal. Only that will give the Republican Party a chance at long-term legitimacy and our country its best chance to heal.

Otherwise, the whole ship is going down.

Your career as Senate Majority Leader is over for at least two years and likely forever.

But you can still play a large role in breaking Trump’s spell over his followers by holding him accountable from within the Party.

When they see Republicans themselves orchestrating his removal and ensuring justice is served, it will help to dissolve their blind trust.

I believe you must take a significant share of the responsibility for rectifying this debacle. It’s a simple as that.

Two weeks is enough for Trump to foment violence across our land if nothing is done to stop him.

Take down the aspiring despot that you helped to create for the good of your party and country.

That, I believe, is your sacred duty.
